Developmental Edit
$.03 PER WORD

This type of edit is an in-depth review that covers the
"big-picture" issues and deep-level restructuring. Feedback is given on plot, structure, characters, pacing, writing mechanics, dialogue, tense, stakes, and marketability compiled in a detailed editorial report. I will provide targeted comments throughout the manuscript pointing out which lines sing, what needs to be pushed, and give prompts to help you deepen the elements of characterization and storytelling.

Ready to CREATE YOUR EPIC?
Contemporary
Realistic fiction that depicts our world and society with a cast of imaginary
characters and situations. Set in modern times, this genre portrays characters
coming to understand themselves and others.

Fantasy
Centered around completely fictional worlds, or in a version of this world with
elements of magic and supernatural. Includes epic/high, low, urban, historical,
and grim dark fantasy sub-genres.

Graphic Novels
Similar to comic books, graphic novels present stories using visual frames to support dialogue that deals with character growth and development as well as develop challenging thematic concepts.
Romance
A story where the primary plot involves falling in love and has an emotionally satisfying ending. This genre has many sub-genres, including paranormal, historical, and contemporary.

Science Fiction
Stories that are not very likely to happen in real life, but are most often set in the future and tie in with science and technology. Also referred to as speculative fiction.

Suspense & Thriller
Novels where the plot revolves around the hero gathering information to solve a puzzle or a crime before it's too late.

Women's Fiction
Mainstream realistic fiction featuring one or more female protagonists who face challenges, difficulties, and crisis they need to overcome.

Young Adult
YA is not a genre, but rather a targeted audience that makes up a large part of the marketplace. Novels are generally coming-of-age stories and feature characters typically between the ages of 14 - 18. While they are marketed toward adolescents and young adults, these stories are also popular among adults.
WHAT IS A DEVELOPMENTAL EDITOR?
A developmental editor looks at the big-picture storytelling issues. While every editor has their
unique style, the overall goal is the same – to help authors create their best story. They
immerse themselves in your work, leaving no word unturned to identify the missing pieces.
They become your reader, your cheerleader. Advice is given on areas like voice, plot, pacing,
tension, readability, characterization, and marketability. Developmental editing does not
address grammar, spelling, punctuation, or sentence structure.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M READY FOR A DEVELOPMENTAL EDITOR?
During the writing process, a developmental editor comes into play AFTER a good dose of
self-editing has been completed. By this time beta readers and critique partners should have
had their pass too. It also comes BEFORE the line editing and proofreading phases.
ARE YOU GOING TO FIX GRAMMAR AND SPELLING MISTAKES WITH YOUR
DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT?
Maybe a few, but the main focus is on the content. Grammar and spelling mistakes fall under
copyediting and can be done once the line edit is complete.
WHAT OTHER SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE?
Aside from the developmental edit, we provide traditional line editing, coaching,
query letter/synopsis critique, book blurb creation, book cover design, marketing material, and
website design.
IN WHAT FORMAT SHOULD I SEND MY MANUSCRIPT?
Manuscripts should be sent as a Word document, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt font,
1-inch margins, and paginated.
WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
PayPal, check by mail, and credit cards are accepted.
DO YOU REQUIRE A DEPOSIT?
To lock in a quoted rate and secure a spot in the Three Crows Editorial calendar, a $150 nonrefundable deposit is required for each project.
CAN I ASK FOR UNLIMITED ADVICE?
I love helping writers succeed! Since editors have strict deadlines to meet, any advice that goes beyond the project we’re working on is available for an hourly rate of $90.
WILL YOU HELP ME WRITE MY QUERY LETTER AND SYNOPSIS? MY BOOK COVER BLURB?
While I will not write your synopsis for you, I will happily provide feedback on both your synopsis and query letter. Both critiques come with three passes and the fee is $150 for each.
If we collaborated on a book together, I can create a book cover blurb or query letter for $250. Both will include up to five passes.
Want to tackle your own blurb? I’ll provide feedback with up to five passes for $150.
