As an aspiring writer, advice can come from all angles—friends, family, workshops, and fellow writers. However, some words of wisdom can stick with you long after you hear them. For me, the most powerful author advice for writers I received came from none other than #1 New York Times best-selling author Kate DiCamillo. Her powerful words have not only inspired me but have also shaped my writing journey in profound ways.
I remember the day I heard Kate speak at my small-town library while on tour promoting her book "Raymie Nightingale." She radiated warmth and genuine passion for storytelling, and I found myself hanging on her every word. As she shared her journey from struggling writer to bestseller, one thing became abundantly clear: persistence is crucial.
After her presentation, I mustered the courage to ask her what the most important piece of advice was that she could offer aspiring authors like me. Without hesitation, she peered over her pink rimmed glasses and replied, “Never give up. No matter how hard it gets, keep going.”
Kate’s words resonated deeply. Too often writing can feel like an uphill battle. Rejections, self-doubt, and the inevitable comparison to other writers can weigh heavily on anyone’s spirit. And let’s not forget that awful imposter syndrome. It’s easy to feel discouraged and consider throwing in the towel, but Kate's advice is a reminder that tenacity is key.
She explained her own struggles—how many times her stories were rejected before finding their homes. Her path was not linear; it was filled with obstacles, yet she continued to write. Each word she penned was a testament to her belief that the world needed her stories. This revelation inspired me to embrace my challenges, viewing them not as roadblocks but as integral steps on my path to discovering my unique voice.
Kate also emphasized the importance of enjoying the writing process itself. She spoke about the joy of creating characters and worlds, reminding us that writing should not merely be a means to an end but a fulfilling journey in itself. This perspective shifted how I approached my writing. Instead of fixating solely on publication, I started to relish the act of writing—crafting sentences, developing characters and worlds, and exploring different genres.
I've come a long way since that inspiring talk, but the words of Kate DiCamillo have become a constant beacon on this journey. Her advice to never give up writing has instilled in me a sense of resilience and purpose. Every time I open my laptop to write, I hear her voice encouraging me to push through my doubts and fears. And yes, every time I pen a new novel, those doubts and fears are there waiting for me. But. I. Keep. Going.
To all the aspiring writers out there: Remember Kate’s words. Embrace the struggles, find joy in the process, and seek out a community that lifts you up. Your voice is important, and the world deserves to hear your stories. Keep going!
Strap that seatbelt and grip the wheel...it's time to blaze the writing trail!
